Sight Care

It will come as no surprise that vision is the dominant sense used in driving.

  • Surveys consistently claim that road users are aware how important good vision is to road safety.
  • The DVLA relies on car drivers to keep an eye on their vision and expects each driver to be responsible for not driving with poor vision.
  • Unfortunately as an optometrist I found that too often drivers underestimated whether they still had safe vision for driving.

When did you last measure out 20.5 metres to make sure you can read a car number plate before getting behind your steering wheel?

As  a provider of sight care I saw too many patients who admitted to wearing specs to see their TV screen clearly, but don’t think they needed them for driving. Surely if distant things appear clearer with glasses on, then shouldn’t they be worn when driving?
